The Hanging Temple, Datong

The Hanging Temple, also known as the Xuankong Temple, is located on a 75-meter-high wall near Mount Heng in Shanxi Province of China. It is in a completely vertical area and is impressive as soon as you see it from afar. It was built more than 1,500 years ago, and is known for its steep location and also because it is the only one that combines the three traditional Chinese religions: Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

Highlights of The Hanging Temple

How could the temple withstand the baptism of wind and rain for so many years? The Hanging temple is a true architectural marvel. A peculiar mechanical theory was applied to construct the frame. The transverse beams were inserted halfway into the rock as foundations, while the rock behind became their support. Seen from below, it looks like a castle collapsed in the air. In fact, it has stood for thousands of years.

Features of The Hanging Temple

Why they build a temple like this? First of all, the location is a very important reason. Building the temple on the cliff could leave it far from floods. In addition, the mountain protects it from rain and snow; and the surrounding mountains also reduce long-term sun damage. Secondly, the builders followed a principle of Taoism: remain quiet, not rooster or dog noises; especially from above, all noises disappear.

Things to Do in The Hanging Temple

The temple is a bit difficult to climb, but it is definitely worth seeing the beautiful traditional architectures and precious designs within the many rooms of the temple. A maze of steps and walkways along the cliff lead from one prayer hall to the next, including the Changxian Bridge, a suspended passage that connects the northern and southern parts of the temple. It is worth highlighting the amount of details that the temple has. It is very beautiful inside, where the colors are more appreciated. You can see numerous Buddhist statues. The entire complex is made of wood and is a true reflection of the type of construction in China more than a millennium ago. In addition to the temple itself, everything around it is beautiful. It is located in the middle of a canyon and the views are impressive. It is also worth exploring some of the trails that cross the river.

A majority of China's temples enjoy a high reputation around the world for their architectural design, but none surpass the Hanging Temple in terms of uniqueness. Do you like this wonderful construction? It must be admitted that it is a little difficult to climb the Hanging Temple, the experience will be totally worth it.
