Xi'an City Wall

The Xi'an City Wall, found in the center of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, with a rectangular shape. It is one of the largest and most completely preserved ancient walls in China. It includes the wall of the Tang Dynasty and that of the Ming Dynasty, usually referring specifically to the wall of the later. Locals are accustomed to calling the inner Wall an ancient city, covering an area of 11.32 square kilometers, and the famous Bell and Drum Tower of Xi'an is located in the Center of the ancient City.

Features of Xi'an City Wall

It has an approximate length of 14 kilometers, a height of 12 meters, and a width that varies between 15 and 18 meters. As a fortification, there are moats, drawbridges, watchtowers and other defensive buildings throughout the wall. Among the four gates of the wall, the South Gate, also known as Yongning Gate, stands out the most. It is very magnificent and imposing, therefore it is the first option for travelers to start visiting.

Things to Do on Xi'an City Wall

Along the top of the wall there is a path with a width of 12 to 14 meters. It is advisable to walk along the wall. Of course, cycling is also a good option. In total, the wall takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to pedal. Additionally, you can appreciate the wonderful views of the modern city. At the same time, there is a fixed-time performance at the South Gate, demonstrating how armored guards patrolled and opened the gate in ancient times. The watchtowers and other parts of the wall are illuminated at night, very beautiful and impressive.
